CUBA MOTORCYCLE RIDERS
On a recent trip to Cuba, I was able to make contact with Adolfo R. Prieto Rosell President of the L.A.M.A. Latin America Motorcycle Association. We met at a roadside refreshment stand half way between Havana and Varadero. Adolfo was on his 58 Duo-glide HD with a fellow countryman riding a 1957 Matchless 650 G11 alongside a late 40’s HD flat head on loan and ridden by wayward Texan.
The 57 Matchless G11 with the tank removed to repair a broken throttle cable.
My journey to Cuba was sans motorcycle but we brought all of the extra HD and Triumph shirts from home along with some pins from HD and our local Rocky Mountain Section for the CVMG Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group. We gave away many shirts to locals before meeting Adolfo, but still had a bag of shirts to give to his group.
I heard some Canadians are planning on shipping bikes to Cuba for a ride. If I can get the details, I will print them here.
In the meantime we will collect more shirts for our next trip to Cuba.
Here’s a comment and info from Kristen MacQueen
Great to see you met up with Adolfo, Manuel & William. Great guys! We are an east coast organization that has been involved in travel in Cuba since 1993. Our latest project involves motorcycle touring in Cuba. Our first proposal was/is to get together a minimum of 8-10 riders and send their own personal rides in a container ship from Halifax to Havana (5 shipping days) for 2 and 3-week tours in Jan & Mar 2012. This is by far the most economical way to tour Cuba on your own bike. But for those who are not keen on shipping or don’t have that much time to spend riding in Cuba in the winter, we’re also negotiating with a Danish company which has just imported 12 new HD’s to Cuba to offer an 8-night tour including their rental bikes. More info to be published soon on the tour option with rental equipment.
